Hardy Naturalised Herbaceous Perennial, usually of arable land; with dense heads of deep purplish-blue pea flowers on tall, leafy stems above rich green foliage in June to July.

Very attractive to Butterflies and Bees; it is a food plant of the Clouded Yellow, Pale Clouded Yellow and Short tailed Blue Butterfly Caterpillars.
Was widely cultivated (as Alfalfa) as a fodder crop, and also used medicinally to relieve anæmia and hæmorrhaging.
