Hardy Native Biennial, usually of Rough Grassland and Wasteland; with purple thistle-like flowers on tall, stout, leafy stems above very large foliage in July to September, followed by “sticky bud” fruits.

Wildlife Value:
Very attractive to Butterflies and Bees; food plant of the caterpillars of Painted Lady butterflies and Frosted Orange moths.
Other Interest:
Used in herbal medicine to reduce inflamation and control infections; Cullinary: all parts are used in varous ways.
